The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:4 (NIV)

On the 40th anniversary of the first human being to walk on the moon, the BBC had an interview with astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and they were playing sound archives from NASA’s mission control, including the marvelous words of Neil Armstrong: “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

They also featured a man who was speaking on behalf of a small but vocal group who, 40 years later, still did not believe that the moon landing actually happened. This man was very articulate, and as far as he was concerned, the whole thing was the massive conspiracy of a few people to deceive the public.

Surprisingly, a Gallup poll taken back in 1989 said that 6% of Americans did not believe that the moon landings actually took place and 5% were undecided. What produces this kind of radical skepticism? It’s hard to say, but the Bible does tell us what lies behind unbelief in the gospel.

Think about people in your life who are deeply resistant to the gospel. Is there someone you love who is a skeptic? Perhaps they’ve heard the gospel many times, but it seems to make no difference. What’s going on with them?

We’re going to take a trip inside the mind of an unbeliever. You may say, “How can you do that? Isn’t it arrogant to think you know what’s going on in another person’s mind?” It would be arrogant for us to make this claim, but God knows what’s going on in the mind of every person.

Do you know someone who is a skeptic?
