“Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” John 1:51

The picture is taken from the story of Jacob. One night, Jacob had a dream in which he saw a ladder, or more accurately, a stairway from earth to heaven with angels ascending and descending on it.

“[Jacob] dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven… the angels of God were ascending and descending on it… the LORD stood above it and said, ‘I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac’” (Gen. 28:12-13).

Jacob likely saw a manifestation of the Son of God at the top of the stairway, ready to come down into the world! But here in John’s Gospel, the one who stood at the top of the stairway (in heaven) with angels ascending to him, now stands at the bottom of the stairway (on earth) with angels descending on him.

Jacob saw the Son of God at a great distance in heaven. Nathaniel saw the Son of God up-close-and-personal on earth—that’s the incarnation! Jesus Christ came into the world so that you could know the blessing of “God with us.”

Christ is no longer at the bottom of the stairway. Hebrews tells that he is seated at the right hand of the Majesty on high, far above the angels (Heb. 1:4). Heaven is open! Angels are ascending and descending as they are sent out to serve those who inherit salvation (Heb. 1:14).
