God opposes the proud. 1 Peter 5:5 (NIV) Humility is a unique challenge for two groups of people: 1. For people with great success. If you’ve built a business or worked your way up a career ladder, it is hard to be humble. If you have earned multiple degrees, if...
Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Joshua 24:14
The Lord calls his people to a totally exclusive commitment, whatever the cost and whatever the outcome. He is God. We are his servants.
Our role in life is to do whatever God says. The world gets it backward. It wants us to say, “I am God.” That’s what the tower of Babel was about—proclaiming human greatness. But the Bible says God himself is the center of all things, and we are here to serve him!
God made you for himself, and you will find yourself in giving yourself wholly to him. You belong to him! That’s why Jesus said that as long as you are trying to save your life you will lose it, and it is only in losing your life for his sake and for the gospel that you will keep it. The only way to find freedom is by becoming a slave of Jesus Christ (Rom. 6:18). So fear the Lord, grasp hold of who he is, and serve him with all faithfulness.
God calls not just for our total allegiance, he calls for our exclusive allegiance: “Throw away the gods your forefathers worshipped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:14). It is helpful to define the other gods as “what the surrounding culture calls great.”
There are many idols, and you can choose the one that best fits your needs. If one of the idols does not work out for you, choose another one. But the commitment that Joshua calls the people to make is to one God. They are to be committed exclusively to him and no other, whatever happens, whatever the cost, whether he comes through or not. That’s what commitment is.
Are you ready to commit yourself exclusively to the Lord? Tell the Lord and ask him to help you give yourself wholly to him today.
