“You will see greater things than these… Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” John 1:50-51

Jesus says to Nathaniel, “You are impressed because I knew exactly what was going on with you under the fig tree. Well, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! You will see heaven itself opened!”

Whatever you may have experienced in the Christian life, the truth is—you ain’t seen nothing yet! You will see heaven opened and the angels ascending and descending. The world longs to see this, but it cannot, apart from faith in Jesus Christ.

1. The principle is very simple.
God will give you more light, when you follow the light you already have. Nathaniel has been open and responsive to what he knows of Jesus, and on that basis, Jesus says that he will see more: “You shall see greater things than these” (1:50).

Believe in Jesus Christ as much as you can see of him now, and you will know him more. If you demand to see everything first, you will never believe. But if you are willing to believe on the basis of what God has already shown you, Jesus promises that you will see more. The Christian life is one of faith seeking understanding, not the other way around.

2. The promise relates to the Second Coming of Christ.
In Christ you are going to see greater things than you have ever yet seen: “The Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done” (Mat. 16:27). May all of us be ready for that day.

Are you following the light you already have?
