All the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. 2 Samuel 5:3
These people had been David’s enemies, but now they are his friends. In this covenant, the king commits himself to these people and they commit themselves to him. The old hostilities are gone. These are now David’s people, and David is their king.
Notice David made a covenant with them “before the Lord.” He made a sacred, unbreakable commitment. He will never abandon or renounce these people. He will always seek their good and he will do whatever it takes to be their shepherd, even if it costs him his life!
Then notice what the people do: “They anointed David king over Israel” (5:3). There was a specific, public act in which they committed their lives and their loyalty to this king who pledged himself to them.
These people knew that David was God’s anointed king. But knowing that David was God’s anointed king did not bring them into David’s kingdom! They came into David’s kingdom when they anointed David as their king.
Have you crowned Jesus as the king of your life? The question is not whether you believe that Jesus rose from the dead, the question is: What have you done about it? Is your heart and your life completely surrendered to him? Nothing would be more absurd than to believe that Jesus is God’s anointed king and yet to live at a distance from him and resist his rule over your life!
Are you living at a distance from Jesus and resisting his rule over your life?
