And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6

This ancient story may seem a long way from the realities of your life today, but Hebrews applies the story of Enoch directly to us. After telling us that Enoch walked with God, Hebrews says, “Whoever would draw near to God…”

Walking with God is not just for Enoch. It is for us today. Whoever would draw near to God… This is an open invitation. Whoever is as inclusive as you can get. So how can you draw near to God? How can you live in the constant, conscious enjoyment of the presence of God?

If you would draw near to God, you “must believe that he exists” (11:6). There’s more here than believing there is a God. If you would draw near to God, you must believe that He is who He says He is. Don’t go looking for a god of your own imagination. God has made Himself known in the Bible, and if you want to walk with Him, you must believe what He says about Himself.

If you would draw near to God, you must believe “that he rewards those who seek him” (11:6). It’s no good saying, “If God wants me, He can make Himself known to me.” God has made Himself known in Jesus Christ. Our calling is to seek Him.

This is a constant theme of Scripture: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened” (Matt. 7:7-8).

God invites you to walk with Him. If you seek Him, you will find Him. “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart” (Jer. 29:13).

Are you waiting for God to make the next move? Or are you seeking after God?
