You must be born again. (John 3:7, NIV)
Imagine overhearing this brief conversation at work or at school: “How did you become a Christian?” Answer: “I don’t know. I guess I was born into it.”
Friend, no one is born a Christian. You can be born Jewish, Muslim, or Hindu, but you cannot be born a Christian. Christianity does not run in the blood, sin does. Jesus said, “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit” (3:6).
No one is born a Christian. Sin runs in the blood; grace does not. (John 3:6)
You may say, “I come from a good family. I was born to Christian parents.” That may be true, but that does not make you a Christian.
Sin runs in the blood; grace does not. If you’ve been working on the assumption that grace runs in the blood, and sin does not, please listen to the Bible. You can’t ride into heaven on the faith of your parents or your friends, or by being part of a church.
This is good news. If grace ran in the blood, then those who came from faithless families would have no hope. Sin is the great leveler. We are all sinners by nature and practice. We all stand on a level playing field before God—sinners, to whom God offers his grace in Jesus Christ.
Please take this truth seriously today. If you cannot see this truth about yourself, you will not receive the great salvation that God offers to you in Jesus Christ.
