Non-Invasive Faith

July 6, 2020

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” Luke 6:46 (NIV)

Suppose you go to the doctor, and he diagnoses some serious condition. He says to you “This will need treatment, and there are two ways we can go about this… the first is surgery. But there is an alternative treatment that we do for this condition. It is non-invasive.”

At this point, most people would be focusing on the second option. Who likes the idea of someone knocking them out, and then taking a scalpel to cut them open? If surgery is going to save your life, you should be grateful for it, but most of us would avoid it if at all possible! We want the non-invasive option, and if that’s not possible, then give us the minimally invasive option.

We naturally think the same way about faith. Just as many people are drawn to orphan faith that takes inspiration from the example of Jesus, without depending on Him actually being present, many others opt for a minimally invasive faith. They agree that Jesus rose from the dead, but somehow this faith remains outside of them.

If orphan faith is a faith that draws its inspiration from Jesus but does not depend on Him actually being there, non-invasive faith is a faith that affirms the truth about Jesus, but it does not cut into the fiber of everyday life.

Why do you think that noninvasive faith is appealing to many people today? Has Jesus “invaded” your life?
