Hope deferred makes the heart sick… Proverbs 13:12

If you keep thinking that something is going to happen, and it doesn’t, you end up feeling sick. It breaks your heart. Don’t put yourself in that position. Don’t set yourself up to be disappointed.

Think about the history of the world in the last 100 years. The nineteenth century ended with extraordinary optimism—mankind was coming to a “golden age.” Fourteen years into the 20th century we had the First World War. But people said, “It will be the war to end all wars. If we can just get past this problem, then we will come into a new and marvelous world.”

Then it was only a matter of 20 years before the Second World War. After that it was the Cold War for the next 50 years, but then we ended the 20th century with tearing down the Berlin Wall. At the end of the Cold War, people began to speak about a New World Order. Well, it hasn’t been twenty years and now we are immersed in a whole new kind of war—the War on Terror.

People say, “When are we going to see the kind of world we had hoped for?” The answer is that you aren’t going to see it here! All visions of Utopia are doomed to failure.

What false hopes have you been indulging?
