Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching. Proverbs 1:8
Wisdom is speaking here in Proverbs 1, but whose voice is it? Notice, in the New Testament, we find that Jesus is clearly described as the wisdom of God:
You are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God (1 Cor. 1:30).
Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col. 2:2-3).
We preach Christ crucified… [and] to those who are called…Christ [is] the power of God and the wisdom of God (1 Cor. 1:23-24).
Therefore, when we read in Proverbs that wisdom calls, we are to understand that the voice of the Son of God is calling out to us. Wisdom is presented as a person who calls out to us, offering something of great value.
God has given us more than wisdom in a book. He has given us His Son, who is wisdom in the flesh, and to all who are in Christ, God gives the Spirit of wisdom, the Holy Spirit, so that through the Spirit of wisdom, we may come to know the Lord better (Eph. 1:17).
You gain wisdom through the Word as you walk with Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. The way of godly wisdom is for disciples only. This is not a course that you can check off. Christ is wisdom in the flesh, and you are pursuing wisdom as you follow Jesus.
To follow Jesus is to pursue wisdom. To pursue wisdom is to follow Jesus. Proverbs describes what this looks like. It lays out the life to which wisdom calls us—the life of a disciple of Jesus.
