“But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.” Luke 9:20

Confessing that Jesus is the Christ does not mean that you have your whole life sorted out. It does not mean that you believe perfectly and have no doubts. It does not mean that you have all your questions answered and can’t think of any more. It does not mean that you have been successful in implementing everything Jesus calls you to do in your life.

How do we know this? Look at what happens to the disciples after they make this confession.

In verse 33, Peter is so confused that he does not know what he’s saying. In verse 40, the disciples fail miserably in their attempts to minister to someone in desperate need.

By verse 46, an argument breaks out among the disciples about who is the greatest. And in verse 54, James and John suggest that it might be a good idea to call down fire from heaven on a Samaritan village. All this happens before the end of the chapter!

So clearly, making this confession cannot mean that you are a perfect Christian and that you’ve got your whole life sorted out. Nobody in this life understands fully, or believes perfectly, or serves flawlessly.

So what does it mean to confess that Jesus is the Christ? Confessing that Jesus is the Christ means that you embrace Jesus as prophet, priest, and king.

Do you feel that you have your life all (or mostly) sorted out? Is this keeping you from taking your stand and confessing that Jesus is the Christ?
