Why Are There So Many Fearful Christians?

April 28, 2020

“You will be like God.” Genesis 3:5

God brings about the beginning of life, makes us male and female, tells us what marriage is, and determines the time of our death. But our culture has been assuming the right to do these things.

We want to determine which children should be born. We want to make gender a matter of personal choice. We want to redefine marriage. We want the right to determine the time and circumstances of our own death. We want to remove God from the throne.

The same problem lies at the root of terrorism. God is the One who, on the last day, will bring the immoral and unbelieving to judgment. But terrorists see it as their job to bring justice now.

Many of us have been raised with a diminished gospel that says, “God loves you. All you have to do is say ‘Yes’ to Him and you will be blessed forever.” So people say “Yes” to God and then spend the rest of their lives resenting Him, because their lives are not as they would like.

We see ourselves as the ones on the throne and God as the one who exists to serve us by making our lives as we want them to be.

But the first word of the gospel is that there is a sovereign Lord who lays claim to our lives. The second is that we are sinners who deserve nothing but judgment from God. The third is that He has sent His Son into the world as the Savior who alone is able to bring peace between us and God. The fourth is that this Savior can be ours as we turn to Him in faith and repentance.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how fearful are you today?
