The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Isaiah 40:8
Human lives come and go; they are fragile. But God’s Word stands forever. Children grow. Young people mature. Adults move through life, and with advancing years, become ever more aware that their powers of body and mind have begun to fade. Eventually they die and one generation gives way to the next.
But one human life has been different from all the others: “As the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself” (John 5:26). Life is given to us, and one day it will be taken from us, but Jesus has life in himself. “No one takes [my life] from me… I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again” (10:18).
None of us can say this, but Jesus can. And he laid down this life when he died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins. Then he took it up again in his mighty resurrection. This Jesus is the Son of God! He is the Word of God! And he stands forever!
Your life is a beautiful gift from God, but it is also fragile. Seizing the wheel and piloting your own life is the surest way to disaster. Looking to teachings and philosophies that come and go, or to people who live and die, is like building your life on a foundation of sand. But the Word of the Lord stands forever, and this Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
