“For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Matthew 12:50

The evidence that we belong to Jesus, that we are part of His family, will be seen in our obedience to His Father’s commands.

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father in heaven” (7:21). In other words, knowing the will of God is of no value to you, if you do not do it. And knowing the words of Jesus is of no help to you, if you do not actually do what He says.

Jesus said, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand” (7:26). The person who hears Jesus’ words and does not do them is like a person who has a beautiful beach view, but his life is a disaster waiting to happen. When the storm comes, his house will collapse completely.

But Jesus also said, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (7:24). The person who hears the words of Jesus and does them is like a wise man who built his house on a rock. And when the storms of life come, his house will stand firm.

When you pray, “Your will be done,” you are embracing God’s commands. You are ruling out what God forbids, and you are ruling in what God commands.

Are you building your life on sand or on rock?
