In the beginning was the Word… John 1:1

It has often been said that all religions are like blind men trying to describe an elephant.

  • One blind man stands behind the elephant, reaches out his hand and takes hold of its tail. He says, “The elephant is like a long thin rope.”
  • A second blind man stands in front of the elephant, takes hold of its trunk and says, “Not true, the elephant is like a long flexible tube.”
  • And a third blind man stands alongside the elephant, reaches out his hand and touches the elephant’s side. He says, “I don’t know what you guys are talking about, the elephant is like a huge wall made of leather.”

The point of the story is this: “No one has ever seen God, so all religions are like blind men trying to describe an elephant.”

But what if the elephant were able to speak? What if the elephant could say: “Let me tell you who I am. I have a trunk, a body, and a tail. Listen to me, you blind men, and I will tell you who I am. Then you will be able to make sense of your experience!”

“In the beginning was the Word…” (1:1). God speaks and he has made himself known. Otherwise we would never be able to know him.

If you had to choose one word, would you describe yourself as cynical, skeptical, confident, (or some other word) that God can be known? Why?
