Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing. (Luke 23:34) With every year that passes, I become more deeply convinced that the greatest privilege, and the highest calling I have as a pastor is to communicate from the Bible, as clearly and compellingly as I can, the love of God poured […]
7 Words from the Cross
You know that Jesus suffered and died on the cross…but you’re not sure how this was an act of love for you. Jesus spoke seven times during the three hours he was hanging on the cross, and each time he spoke, he revealed more of his love. In this series, we’ll hear Jesus’ words from the cross, and discover his love for us there. As you listen to these words afresh, may you be able to say with Christians in every generation: No one has ever loved me like this. No one will ever love me like this. But this is how Christ loves me, and in the cross I see the full extent of his love.
Note: The sermon “Breakfast with the Devil, Supper with the Savior” sparked the idea for the Heaven, How I Got Here: The Story of the Thief on the Cross line of evangelistic resources.
One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: ‘Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!’ (Luke 23:39) Here is a man in the last hours of his life. He is completely lost, he is completely helpless, and he is still angry with God. Suffering doesn’t always make people more tender. It […]
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time […]
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Matthew 27:46) Easter has passed, but our series on the cross continues. That’s significant. It would be easy to view Easter like passing “Go” on the Monopoly board. Every year we go round and pass this place where we pick up good things through the death […]
Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. (John 19:28-29) There are many […]
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished.’ With that, he bowed his head and gave up his Spirit. (John 19:30) I have looked forward to the privilege of speaking on these words today. Jesus has come through the agony of his suffering, enduring all the pains of hell. He has cried […]
Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. (Luke 23:46) This subject of death is relevant to every person. Unless our Lord Jesus comes first, this will happen to you. You will go through it. You might think today […]
